Ok so, a guy I work with (Zach) applied to a job at imo.im, and asked me to osmosis all of my Linux and database knowledge into him for his interview next week. Easy, right?
Wrong!
He gave me the requirements for the job, and here is a quote (emphasis mine):
...
- ...
- Adept at hacking open source software.
- Experience with HTML, CSS, Javascript, MySQL a plus.
- Know Linux better than you can sing Britney lyrics.
I fail.

I just finished grading some intro compsci assignments, one of which was to make a webpage with some autobiographical stuff on it. My urge to fail this guy (edit: whoops, I meant girl) almost overcame me (unfortunately there is no rubric item for "-50, likes IE"):

Also, ~70% of students say something like, "I've used both Macs and PCs," which always drives me crazy. Ahh.

IT SNOWED! I haven't seen this much snow (umm, 2 inches?) since middle school or maybe early high school, sadly.
I wish I had gotten up earlier, though. I woke up at 9:30 for class at 10:05, and the streets and sidewalks were covered in snow. By the time I came back from class and watching the inauguration at 1, a lot had already melted so these pictures aren't as good as they could be. Here's a view into a grassy field in the space between apartments:

This is Yearby St. near my apartment:

Essentially nothing interesting has happened in the 10 days of my life. I was assigned homework on the first day of class in each of five classes, causing me to drop two hard math courses and my math minor so I don't have to die my last semester here, and instead of those I'm taking an interesting-sounding compsci course. Also I read a rumor on Slashdot that Microsoft is laying off 15,000 employees. Fun.
Recently, I've also observed the following:
- 20 F is pretty cold.
- Biking (especially downhill) is really, really cold.
- 75 cent gloves from Walmart are unbelievably effective despite being full of holes.
- Israel is always defending against somebody, aren't they? Man, those pesky schools and children and whatnot, always attacking poor Israel.
- The Macbook Wheel is the coolest computer ever. (Not nerdy, and worth your time. I promise.)
- KDE 4.2 (the release candidate) is awesome.
- Linux is evil. It prevented some dumb girl from going to class for two whole semesters, apparently. Yeah right, as if she's not just looking for an excuse to not be in school. (This link may or may not be worth your time.)

What kind of dog should I get when I move to Seattle? I was thinking golden retriever or rough collie, but that's just from reading Wikipedia and other random stuff online, since I don't really know anything about dogs. Any thoughts? (The adult form must have some dimension well over two feet long, not including tail. No stupid dogs like poodles or chihuahuas.)

Happy New Year, everyone. My story for today is that on the night of New Year's Eve, Eva got into a bar using my ID... yes that's right, she looks enough like me that she passed as me.
I won't describe the rest of the night since it would cause embarrassment to certain people (or... maybe not), but anyways, here's a picture I took at the Sears where Kmart used to be:

What a huge discount. Also, there was an identical-looking item (same brand, style, size, but different product code) 5 feet away for $12.99 or something.
