Last time Java the <5 lb Maltese came over, she stayed for a few weeks and at no point could we put her and Morgan in the same room even with supervision. The closest we could let them come to each other was when out on walks, when we could hold Java in her bag. As long as the bag was outside Morgan's field of view and there were enough external distractions available, Morgan would stay fairly calm.
Through a lot of hard work, Morgan's gotten a lot better and seems to grudgingly accept Java. The photo on Facebook of Morgan and Java sitting next to each other with treats on their noses is one of my favorite photos ever and brings me unbridled joy because of the amount of progress (in Morgan's aggression) that's reflected in it.
These days Morgan acts like a mean older sibling and likes to pick on Java. After a play session, Java's ears, back, and tail are always wet because Morgan keeps snipping at her. There's still a lot of work to do, but it's lot better than trying to rip her face off, I guess. I tried tossing a stick for them to fetch, but I think excited Morgan forgets that Java exists, and then steps all over her with her giant paws.
Anyways, I'm only here today to tell one funny story. One night, after their meals (which are funny in their own right; Morgan rarely picks up anything with her mouth, but after they're both done eating, she always steals Java's empty dish and runs around with it for some reason), I fed them both some rawhide sticks. Morgan loves those more than anything in the world; Java, not so much, but it seems that she saw how much Morgan likes them and decided they must be awesome. So they were both munching on these, and of course Morgan finished first because her jaw and teeth are like 50x bigger. Morgan walked around the room, continually eyeing Java's chew stick and eventually backing Java into a corner behind a chair. Java just kept chewing, avoiding eye contact, when all of a sudden she stopped chewing, dropped the stick, got up and walked towards Morgan, stopped, went back to pick up the stick, dropped the stick at Morgan's feet, and scurried off.
Poor Java. That was the cutest thing ever but I did have to tell Morgan that she's a bad girl because staring to steal treats is not nice.
